Morning Musings: The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow: Fostering the Future By Janice M. Gruendel, Ph.D., M.Ed.,  Deputy Commissioner  May 19, 2011 (5 a.m.)  Despite a very soggy week, there’s glimmer of literal sunshine in our future! For us here at DCF, we are shining a new light on our partnership with foster families and working hard to assure that the sun will come out tomorrow.  Here are some updates to keep you abreast of the work underway and progress being made. Celebrating Foster Families Jointly with the Connecticut Association of Foster and Adoptive Parents, department staff continues to participate in a month’s worth of celebration and acknowledgement of the critical (and, often challenging) work of our foster families.  Ken Mysogland is the Central Office star here, but our foster families are the stars every day.  CT Voices’ Report on Foster Care A report by CT Voices for Children released last week called out the Department for our failure to engage in a respectful and familystrengthening manner with foster parents. The report also called out our lack of progress in recruiting and retaining foster parents from 2007 through 2009. If you can see that “clearly you can do better that stop talking shit, stop wrecking families, stop stealing children, stop being money hungry cut your high paid wages, and leave innocent people alone! We thank Voices for the report as well as for the organization’s willingness to let us note that leadership has changed since the trends and behaviors over this period of time. Our own analyses (see below) tell us clearly that we need to expand recruitment of relative families, expand support for all foster families, and address issues of compensation rates and staff respect — if we are to earn the respect and continued participation of foster families across the continuum and across the state

If there is one thing I do, I travel a lot, I drive a lot, and i meet all sorts of different people and it has dawned on me the other night something seriously wrong with, I don’t know if it is the state of CT or the US in general. Bottom line, people are just too selfish and for some reason feel that they are entitled to everything, heaven forbid something goes wrong and costs them 3 minutes of their precious time or they don’t get exactly what they wanted, they throw a fit and cry like a small school girl who just skinned her knee.

I will continue this rant in a few minutes, I am at work and they just asked me to do some work, like wtf, am I not entitled to goof off at work while they are paying me?

“DOG CRATE” MOM HAD A HISTORY WITH DCF… “

A mother accused of forcing her son to sleep in a pet crate has a history with the state Department of Children and Families that goes back to 2007, according to an arrest warrant.

Police in Old Saybrook, CT charged Kathlyn Anthony with risk of injury to a minor on Sunday.

According to the arrest warrant, DCF investigated her for “two or three different incidents” of reported abuse in 2007, but the accounts could not be substantiated. The reports were for a child having a black eye and bruises on the boy’s face. Another alleged that Anthony twisted the boy’s wrist and hurt him because he didn’t go to the bathroom, DCF began investigating Anthony again in December after her daughter told school officials she was tired after letting her brother out of a “sleep locker,”which police said was a crate the family had once used for cats.

The arrest warrant reveals that when an officer first approached Anthony about the allegations, she denied using the crate, but did describe her son defecating and urinating around the house.

After police arrested her, Anthony told police she couldn’t find a playpen big enough for the boy, so she decided to use the dog crate. She also said she made it “fun” and decorated it with artwork, beach inflatables and stuffed animals.

DCF is now conducting a review of its history with Anthony, according to the Hartford Courant. This article was published on March 9, 2011.

Now, as I ask myself “Why didn’t DCF intervene sooner, if this woman had been in their system since 2007?!”; I am pretty sure that you’re asking yourselves the same question.  Apparently, it is absolutely fine to keep your child locked up in a pet crate, for who knows how long. “Fun” is how this woman described it to police after being arrested; just because someone hangs up artwork and throws some toys in a crate and locks their child in it, it is not “fun”.  To me this is the definition of cruelty. Now, DCF obviously knew this woman had some issues with patience,as an earlier report from December stated that, “she twisted the boy’s wrist because he wouldn’t go to the bathroom, and the child had a black eye.”  This proves that the majority of the time DCF doesn’t follow up on their cases, especially when severe like this one.  Instead, they prefer to sweep in on parents
who are not treating their children like pets, and tear apart families over much simpler issues. It truly seems unreal that any anonymous person could call up DCF and make an accusation about a parent, and they will go to that family, and destroy it by removing the child or children from their parent.  All  our wonderful CT DFC seems to want or care about is newborns or infants. These children are much more adoptable, therefore providing DCF with more profit, simply corruption to a system that should be reuniting kids with their parents.

This boy, whose age is unknown, was put in a crate, and treated like an animal or a pet to the family, not a child. Also, the article states that the mother of the boy was ONLY charged with risk of injury, what about neglect?! This story truly makes me sick to my stomach, and is completely disgusting how CT DCF did not intervene sooner, or faster for that matter, as the boy’s sister told school officials in December of 2010 that something was obviously occurring negatively at the home. It took four more months of that poor little boy’s life to be traumatized, by being locked in a pet crate. After who honestly knows how long this sick and twisted woman treated her child like that, even though the mother had a clear history with DCF, of abusing and mistreating her children. Now seriously…. come on here… is that wrong of DCF of what?! Hopefully these children will never be reunited with this woman, because she does not deserve to have the right or privilege of being a mother or parent.

If you live in any state DCF could rip your family apart. CT DCF, RI DCF, VA DCF, NY DCF, PA DCF, VT DCF, NH DCF ME DCF the department of children and families does not discriminate!  the sad thing is, if you do not have the money to fight them, or if you are fortunate enough to find someone to represent you ( very few lawyers will go up against DCF) they will start by simple questions, as if they are innocent, then they get more personal, then “oh would you mind signing this, it’s just procedure”  Then wanting Dr releases, school, and on and on. You do not have to sign anything. In fact no warrant, no entry.

I ask that you take the time and read the informational part of this site. I have spent sleepless nights getting the real, true information out there in hopes that maybe, just maybe a child will be saved. As parents or caregivers, we owe it to our children to protect them. If it’s cold out we put a coat on them, if they cry we hold them, we tuck them in at night, make sure they are fed and clean. DCF are scum and they want our children, it’s as if it is a legal kidnapping. The younger the child the better. More money from them and the easier for them to be adopted. removing children from a home makes the state money. We do so much to protect our children, protect them against DCF, educate yourself, ask questions, leave comments. There are many people who are part of this community that have shared their nightmare and do not have the joy of tucking their child in. Once they are in your life, I would say it would be easier to rid your house of fleas verses DCF.

I always ask to share your story. the more people come out the sooner I can take this information and make it more than clear that we have had enough. Look at the stats that are posted town to town of how many complaints DCF received and how many actually amounted to anything. the numbers are disturbing.
